Lehigh Cement History

Our roots go deep and wide. Lehigh Cement Company was founded in 1897 by several prominent businessmen from Allentown, Pennsylvania, who recognized the rich natural resources of the Lehigh Valley. Initially, a single-mill operation in Ormrod, Pennsylvania, produced portland cement. Demand for the product quickly exceeded supply. Lehigh Cement Company responded by building and buying several more plants, first in the surrounding area, and later in America's Midwest, South and Pacific Northwest, near centers of growth and commerce. Other cement companies started up in the mid-Atlantic, New York, California, Texas, British Columbia and Alberta and expanded their operations in cement, concrete and other building materials. These fine companies later became associated with Lehigh Cement Company and Lehigh Cement Limited. HeidelbergCement, a major German cement producer, acquired Lehigh Cement Company in 1977. As a result of this acquisition and continued growth, Lehigh's associated companies now extend throughout the U.S. and Canada.
