Sustainability

Lehigh SustainabilityHeidelbergCement and the Lehigh Cement Company see ourselves as partners in the community. At the Global and regional level we promote best practice standards for increased sustainability in the cement industry.

We act responsibly towards the environment by combining economic growth with progressive technology and expertise to protect resources for tomorrow's economy. We promote the preservation of identities and cultures and demonstrate respect and appreciation for our employees, customers, business partners, co-partners and shareholders.

Most of all, we have a vision and strategy for sustainability that is shared by all our regions and business units.

Education is our conduit to sustainability. We want our employees, stakeholders and those around us to understand sustainability from a world perspective to the issues on their own doorsteps. We have implemented action to ensure communication and learning takes place, and look to ongoing education to increase our awareness and improve our actions.

UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) There can be few more pressing and critical goals for the future of humankind than to ensure steady improvement in the quality of life for this and future generations, in a way that respects our common heritage - the planet we live on. As people we seek positive change for ourselves, our children and grandchildren; we must do it in ways that respect the right of all to do so. To do this we must learn constantly - about ourselves, our potential, our limitations, our relationships, our society, our environment, our world. Education for sustainable development is a life-wide and lifelong endeavour which challenges individuals, institutions and societies to view tomorrow as a day that belongs to all of us, or it will not belong to anyone.
