Ocean Tendon Grout Ultra used by Con-Force on Bow River Alberta Bridge Project

albertaThis spring of 2002 saw the construction of a bridge over the Bow River, Alberta, using 64 m (210 ft) long main span girders, some of the longest pre-cast beam girders in the world. The project, part of the Deerfoot Trail extension connecting to Highway 2, is located 8 km south of Calgary. The pre-cast beam girders were manufactured and erected by Con-Force, Calgary. As part of the construction process, Con-Force needed to post-tension the 130 tonne pre-cast beam girders with an unsanded post tensioning grout capable of:

  • excellent pumpability and penetrability
  • Gextended working time
  • flow cone values between 13 and 16 seconds at a maximum w/c of 0.35
  • no bleeding or segregation
  • compressive strengths of 50 MPa at 28 days
  • meeting CSA A23.1-00 "Cement Grout for Bonded Tendons"

Ocean Tendon Grout - Ultra, pre-packaged in 30 kg sacks by Ocean Concrete Products Limited (Lehigh Northwest) in Vancouver BC, met the requirements. Says Scott Adkins, Project Engineer for Con-Force; "I am pleased with how the grout performed, pumping easily and achieving the required 50 MPa compressive strength at 28 days."

Ocean's laboratory in Vancouver BC had developed "Ultra" specifically for this project, working with Scott Adkins in tailoring the product to the meet the technical requirements for the project and the job site issues of flow and pumpability.
