Lehigh Inland Wins Environmental Award
environmental

Lehigh Inland won an Environmental Award, recognizing the company for its achievements in Land Stewardship. The 2002 Cement Industry Environmental Awards celebrate cement producers' innovative practices, programs and projects throughout North America. CementAmericas, the Portland Cement Association and the Cement Association of Canada sponsor the annual awards.

Lehigh's Edmonton, Alberta plant in Canada received the award for Land Stewardship based on several projects:

  • The donation and continual management of a local environmentally significant wetland called Kinokamau Lake. This lake is home to more than 120 species of waterfowl and various mammals.
  • Use of a municipal compost product as a nutrient source for reclamation vegetation both at the clay quarry and at the cement plant site. By using this compost, less waste material goes to a landfill.
  • On-going support of the 'eco-scaping' project at the plant site. Over a 5 year period, this project has converted more than 7000 sq. meters of vacant areas into green space.
  • The successful Peregrine Falcon breeding program. Since 1993, peregrines have been breeding at the site, helping move the falcons off the Endangered Species list.

reclamation"We were extremely pleased to hear about the award for Land Stewardship as well as also being named a finalist for the Overall Environmental Excellence Award," said Brent Korobanik, Environmental Affairs Coordinator for the Edmonton plant. "Lehigh Inland's program of environmental commitment gives our employees the opportunity to work on activities that are good for the company and good for the environment."

On Monday, June 2, at 2:00 pm, a representative from the Portland Cement Association presented the plant with a plaque and a flag to fly at the plant site in recognition of this achievement.
