North America - Lehigh Cement Company Lehigh Employees Recognized by Slag Cement Association

The Slag Cement Association (SCA) recently presented six awards to individuals and groups who led exceptional promotional efforts during 2003 to increase the use of slag cement. Two Lehigh Cement Company employees and one group under Lehigh Cement Company leadership are among the six honorees.

Ryan Jacoby, Lehigh North Sales Representative, received the President's Award for Promoter of the Year. Ryan serves as chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Task Group, which was also honored by the SCA as Region of the Year. The Slag Cement Association noted that as chairman, Ryan motivated the Regional Task Group to accomplish numerous goals, including a greater than four percent growth rate in what was already the most mature slag cement market among the seven regions. The Mid-Atlantic Region encompasses New York City/Long Island, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia and Virginia. The task group has achieved numerous successes in promoting the uses and benefits of slag cement in concrete to architects and engineers, concrete producers, industry construction groups and state DOT officials. Notably, the task group's activities led to favorable changes in the New Jersey Department of Transportation specifications.

Guy Detwiler, Manager Technical Services & Product Development for Lehigh Southwest Cement Company, received a Director's Award for Outstanding Promotional Contributions. Guy is the only Slag Cement Association member working in California. He singly-handedly achieved approval of slag cement's use by the California Department of Transportation. The SCA also noted Guy's frequent contributions to the Association's Technical Committee.

The Slag Cement Association promotes the increased use of slag cement and portland-slag cement blends. It educates customers, specifiers and other end-users on the varied attributes, benefits and uses of these products.
