PHOTO CAPTION: Symbolizing a solid partnership between business and municipality, these three leaders set their handprints in wet concrete as a lasting keepsake. Pictured from left are John Moquin, V.P. Inland Concrete Limited, Mayor Vern Hartwell, Strathcona County, and Wayne Wagner, Inland President. As befits a Grand Opening, there were polished plant tours, well-prepared speakers and good food. Hospitality and good spirits were the order of the day on June 8th for the public celebration of Inland Concrete's newest facility, the Strathcona Plant near Edmonton, Alberta. Federal, provincial, and municipal government representatives attended to lend their support for the new concrete operations center; media cameras were on the scene to record the day's events; and a number of customers and employees also joined in the festivities. The day offered guests a chance to tour the $5 million CAD plant that boasts a designed production rate of 140 m3 per hour (150 - 175 loads per day). Guests saw a demonstration of the Global Positioning Satellite system, which tracks all mixer trucks; the dispatch and batch offices; and concrete-recycling reclaimer system. Normally closed to the public, the Strathcona plant, located just east of Edmonton in Sherwood Park, became a focus of attention for one sunny afternoon. Presentations from Kelly Babichuk, Inland Concrete's Edmonton Area Manager; Wayne Wagner, Lehigh Inland President and COO; Mickey Ryan, Inland Concrete's Manager of Sales and Marketing; and Strathcona County Mayor Vern Hartwell took place midday. Kelly Babichuk extended a thank you to Larry Sunnus, project manager; Darcy Hiebert, project coordinator; and all the remarkable employees who contributed to the vision and construction of the plant. Wayne Wagner gave tribute to the teamwork and dedication that saw the project to completion. Mickey Ryan wrapped up the Inland presentations with the launch of Inland Concrete's newest products: the Superwall SeriesT, Octa-BlocŪ, and Hard-WearT. "We were honored to have Mayor Vern Hartwell give, on behalf of the community, a warm welcome to our new plant," Babichuk said. "Diligent measures were taken to ensure we will be a good neighbor in the Sherwood Park community, and Mayor Hartwell extended his thanks for our tremendous efforts." Following the presentations was an official "Hands in Concrete" ceremony in which President Wayne Wagner; John Moquin, Vice President, Inland Concrete Limited; and Mayor Hartwell all placed their gloved hands in a concrete mold. The ceremony depicted a lasting commitment to a solid partnership between Inland Concrete Limited and Strathcona County. Guests left with a clearer understanding of Inland Concrete's operations and products. The day was a "grand" success. Congratulations to the Grand Opening committee and volunteers. What a commemorative event! Archives
