Rempel Bros. Concrete Launches Alternative Fuel Fleet in British Columbia

Rempel Bros. Concrete has made the choice to use environmentally-responsible biodiesel fuel in its fleet. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel made with renewable resources and blended with petrodiesel.
Rempel Bros. Concrete has become one of the first private fleets in British Columbia to switch to biodiesel, and champion the cleaner-burning fuel made from natural, renewable resources. The implementation of B20 biodiesel in Rempel's North Vancouver fleet was officially launched in April with the release of two specially decorated concrete mixers.

"Adopting biodiesel was an easy choice for an industrial fleet like ours," said Bob Fairbank, Vice President & General Manager of Rempel Bros. Concrete Ltd. "We want to set an example for other small, private fleets. If we can adopt a greener fuel, others can too."

While some municipal and crown fleets are currently piloting the alternative fuel, Rempel is among the first private companies in B.C. to make the switch.

The move to an alternative fuel is just one of many environmental sustainability innovations Rempel Bros. Concrete has pioneered. The company was also one of the first to implement a now popular truck-mounted washout system that allows concrete residue to be carried off construction sites and back to a plant for recycling.

Using biodiesel makes good environmental and economic sense, Fairbank said. "It's also a part of our larger commitment to environmental sustainability and a way to improve air quality in the communities where we live and work."

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel made from renewable resources such as vegetable oils from soy beans or canola. Using the greener fuel shows significant benefits for public health through reduced emissions including black smoke, odor, green house gasses, air toxins and particulates. Biodiesel is blended with petrodiesel for use in regular diesel engines; B20 refers to a blend of 20 per cent biodiesel.

"Biodiesel is a win for industry, because operators can choose a cleaner fuel without having to modify their fleets," says Ian Thomson, CEO of Canadian Bioenergy Corporation, who supplies the biodiesel to Rempel. "While biodiesel is gaining popularity in Western Canada, it's private companies like Rempel that really push the trend forward."
